John Healey Secures Major Typhoon Deal with Türkiye

On March 26, 2026

In a landmark move for both the UK and Türkiye, Defence Secretary John Healey has announced a multi-billion-pound agreement aimed at training Turkish Air Force pilots and ground crew. This strategic partnership is set to secure 20,000 jobs in the UK, a significant boost for the nation’s economy and a vital enhancement of NATO’s combat air capabilities on its eastern flank.

Under the agreement, 10 Turkish pilots and nearly 100 ground crew technicians will receive training in the UK, marking a pivotal moment in military cooperation between the two nations. Healey emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating, “This partnership does not just export world-leading British built jets, it builds alliances, grows our economy, and makes NATO stronger.” The deal represents the largest UK fighter jet export order in nearly two decades, showcasing the UK’s continued leadership in the aerospace sector.

The Typhoon fighter jet, known for its advanced capabilities, has a significant portion of its components manufactured in the UK, with more than a third of each jet being built domestically. This deal not only reinforces the UK’s position in the global arms market but also supports over 6,000 jobs directly linked to the Typhoon programme at BAE Systems sites. Furthermore, the programme sustains more than 1,100 jobs in the South West region and around 800 jobs in Scotland, highlighting its widespread economic impact.

However, Healey’s recent interview revealed some challenges within the UK’s naval capabilities, as he struggled to recall the exact number of ships in the navy fleet. He stated, “We have 17 frigates and destroyers. It’s down from 23 at the end of the last Labour government.” This admission raises questions about the current state of the UK’s naval strength amidst ongoing global tensions.

Despite these concerns, the Typhoon deal is viewed as a vote of confidence in British industry and jobs. Healey remarked, “Türkiye’s decision to acquire Typhoon is a vote of confidence in British industry and British jobs.” This sentiment resonates deeply as the UK seeks to bolster its defence relationships while navigating complex geopolitical landscapes.

The agreement, finalized in October 2025, marks a significant export win for the UK, reinforcing its commitment to international partnerships and collective security. The training of Turkish personnel alongside RAF members is expected to foster stronger ties and enhance operational readiness for both nations.

As the UK continues to strengthen its alliances, observers are keenly watching how this deal will unfold and what further implications it may have for NATO’s strategic posture in the region. The collaboration between the UK and Türkiye not only signifies a robust military partnership but also reflects a broader commitment to shared security interests.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the full scope of the training programme and its long-term impacts, but the initial steps taken by Healey and his team indicate a proactive approach to defence and international cooperation.
