Kyle Walker Announces Retirement

“I am sad to be making this decision, but I’m also very proud of what I’ve achieved with England,” said Kyle Walker as he confirmed his retirement from international football.

Walker, who earned a remarkable 96 caps for the England national team, has been a significant figure in English football since making his senior debut against Spain in November 2011. His career with the national team spanned over a decade, during which he participated in five major tournaments, including the FIFA World Cup and UEFA EURO events.

His final appearance came in a friendly match against Senegal in June 2025, marking the end of a journey that began with the England U19 team in 2009. Walker’s contributions were pivotal, as he played in the FIFA World Cup 2018, UEFA EURO 2016, UEFA EURO 2020, UEFA EURO 2024, and the FIFA World Cup 2022.

Reflecting on his time with the national team, Walker expressed, “To represent your country once, let alone 96 times, I’m extremely proud of that.” He was part of the England squad that reached the UEFA EURO finals in both 2021 and 2024, showcasing his importance in the team’s recent successes.

Walker scored his only international goal against Ukraine in September 2023, a highlight in a career filled with memorable moments. He was also named player of the match in his first start against Sweden in 2011, a testament to his early promise.

At the age of 35, Walker leaves behind a legacy not only as a player but also as a leader, having served as vice-captain during the UEFA EURO 2024. He thanked various managers, including Fabio Capello, Roy Hodgson, Gareth Southgate, and Thomas Tuchel, for their guidance throughout his career.

“The book is now closed and it’s been a whirlwind of a journey, but one that I’ve really, really enjoyed,” Walker stated, encapsulating his feelings about his international career.

Thomas Tuchel, who coached Walker during his time with the national team, remarked, “I know all England fans will join me in congratulating Kyle on an incredible international career.” This sentiment reflects the admiration Walker garnered from fans and peers alike.

As Walker transitions away from international duties, he leaves a significant mark on English football, with his contributions likely to be remembered for years to come.
