Liam Fox has revealed that the golden era of China-UK relations is here to stay
Liam Fox has revealed to the Sunday Express that the golden era of China-UK relations is here to stay.
His comments were made in reference to the China International Import Expo (CIIE) which kicked off in Shanghai yesterday. The event will provide great opportunities for Chinese companies to connect and build relationships with companies on a global scale.
The event is expected to bring an extra £100 million to the UK-China trading relationship, a significant increase on the current £70 billion worth of trade deals.
Fox told the Sunday Express: “This is not your ordinary expo – CIIE is China’s chance to show it is taking steps to level the playing field. This is the platform on which we want and expect to see China signal real intent towards opening up its economy to fair and open competition from International firms.
“It is through concrete and structural openings to the Chinese economy that we can significantly grow the bilateral trade relationship which is already worth close to £70bn and capitalise on the golden era of UK-China relations.”
Fox, Prince Andrew and over 50 British companies – amongst the list is GSK, NP, NA, WorldFirst Asia Ltd, and WCBS – will be representing the UK at the event, as guests of honour.
As the spectre of Brexit looms overhead, Fox has placed a lot of emphasis on the role that China will play in the post-Brexit economy.
Fox added: “Increased market access for UK firms is good for our bottom line, but also delivers for Chinese consumers and businesses.
“It gives them increased choice and fulfils the massive demand for high quality, British goods, and it gives them access to UK expertise in finance, insurance, accountancy and law which will help Chinese companies to reach their full potential.”
