London (Vegan) Foodie of the Month: Ethos

We’re at the end of January, and if you’re like the average Londoner, you’ve likely committed to some form of health-related New Year’s resolution. One of the most popular commitments in 2018 is Veganuary: 31 days of a vegan diet, in an effort to reduce your impact on the planet (and to help the animals who live on it).

But becoming a vegan isn’t always the easiest of tasks, especially when you’re dining out. That’s why we’re thrilled to have discovered Ethos, the deliciously different vegan and vegetarian restaurant in Central London.

Our January Foodie of the Month has successfully put together a concept that will appeal to all foodies (even the hardcore meat-eaters), thanks to the flavour of its veggie food. Upon entry, you’ll notice that Ethos has a very relaxed atmosphere. Each guest is greeted at the door and taken to a table, with drinks service included in your visit.

As for your meal, it’s a pick-n-mix served buffet style on three tables with cold plates and dips, warm plates and desserts. The beauty of Ethos is its weighing concept; pick up a plate, fill up on as much food as you’d like and simply weigh and pay at the counter.

If this sounds like something you’d do at a low-budget wedding or family BBQ, let me set your mind at ease. Ethos may have a simple approach but the venue itself is just the right amount of chic. There’s a Scandi-feel to the interior too, with real trees growing inside the venue.

Now you’ve got your plate, what can you put on it? Work your way through the tables slowly, there’s a lot to try.

Table One: Cold Plates
Start with salads: butternut squash and feta, apple and fennel with caramelised pistachios or sweet potato with roasted peppers, chicory and sorrel yoghurt. Add a side of dips, too from beetroot yoghurt and hummus to smoked butterbean or Mexican salsa.

Table Two: Warm Plates
SINO Radio UK must-eats include the Thai sweetcorn fritters, springtime Scotch egg, chickpea and coconut patties (so, so good!) and the pumpkin Manouri dumplings with chilli sauce. Vegans will love the corn on the cob served with vegan butter, chilli and spring onions.

Table Three: Desserts
This is the only fault you might find with Ethos. THERE IS SO MUCH CHOICE. But then, when is too much dessert ever a problem? Skip the meringue and the turmeric slices. Instead, focus your attention on the vegan and gluten-free Raw Coconut Heart or the lemon cheesecake.

We walked away stuffed and happy, and will be returning very soon. And, in case you fancy a workout with your visit, we’ve got good news. The venue does breakfast yoga, too.

Ethos is open every day of the week, see the exact opening times on the restaurant’s website.
