Man Utd Permanent Boss Search Narrows to Carrick and Nagelsmann

“There is someone internally at Man Utd who is a big, big fan and dreams of Luis Enrique as Manchester United manager one day,” said transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, hinting at the complexities surrounding the club’s ongoing search for a permanent boss.

As the dust settles on a tumultuous season, Manchester United has narrowed its managerial search to two prominent figures: Michael Carrick, who has been at the helm on an interim basis since January 2026, and Julian Nagelsmann. Under Carrick’s leadership, the team has shown remarkable resilience, securing seven wins, two draws, and just one loss in ten matches.

Currently sitting in third place in the Premier League, Carrick’s tenure has been marked by significant victories, including triumphs over rivals Arsenal and Manchester City. His contract, however, is set to expire in the summer of 2026, leaving his future at the club uncertain.

Keith Wyness, a notable voice in football management, confirmed that the options for the permanent position are indeed limited to Carrick or Nagelsmann. “When I looked into it a bit further, the Pochettino contract actually goes into August after the World Cup,” Wyness noted, further complicating the landscape.

Despite Carrick’s impressive record, opinions vary on whether he is the right fit for the long-term vision of Manchester United. Former player Andy Townsend remarked, “I think there’s probably someone out there better than Michael Carrick even though he’s done very well,” suggesting that the search may not be over yet.

With only seven more games left for Carrick to solidify his claim to the permanent role, the pressure is mounting. The team currently sits three points above fifth-placed Liverpool, a position that would secure Champions League football for the next season.

Meanwhile, the prospect of Luis Enrique joining the club seems increasingly unlikely, as Fabrizio Romano has ruled out a move for the Spanish manager at this time. Additionally, Diego Simeone has been mentioned as a potential candidate, with Townsend expressing doubts about Carrick’s style appealing to the United fanbase: “I don’t think his style of play would please the United fans. They want something more flamboyant.”

As the clock ticks down on Carrick’s interim period, the final decision on the permanent manager remains unconfirmed. The exact timeline for appointing the new manager is also unclear, leaving fans and players alike in a state of anticipation.
