Mandy Galloway Paddleboard Rescue: A Life Saved at Sea

What happens when a leisurely paddleboarding trip turns into a desperate fight for survival? For Mandy Galloway, this harrowing question became a reality on July 1, 2023, when she found herself clinging to an overturned paddleboard, two miles from shore, as the weather conditions rapidly deteriorated.

Mandy was paddleboarding with her partner off the coast of Kingsbarns, Fife, Scotland, when the calm waters transformed into a treacherous sea. As the winds picked up and the waves grew, she was dragged away from the safety of the shore. For approximately 90 minutes, she clung to her paddleboard, battling the cold and the rising panic as she drifted further into the abyss.

In a moment of sheer determination, her partner managed to paddle back to shore to raise the alarm. “I thought I was going to die,” Mandy recalled, as she lost feeling in her legs and struggled against the chilling waters. The urgency of the situation prompted the launch of two RNLI lifeboats from the Anstruther lifeboat station, who quickly began their search for her.

As the lifeboats scoured the area, the RNLI volunteers faced a daunting challenge. “At that point, we’re really concerned all three of us were worried that, basically we’re looking for a needle in a haystack,” said Scott Brown, one of the rescuers. The conditions were harsh, but the commitment of the RNLI crew remained unwavering. After what felt like an eternity, they finally located Mandy, who was found extremely hypothermic and weak after her prolonged exposure to the cold sea.

Once rescued, Mandy was treated by a doctor aboard the lifeboat before being transported to the hospital. The ordeal left her shaken but grateful. “They are heroes. Without them, I wouldn’t be here,” she expressed, reflecting on the bravery and dedication of the RNLI volunteers who saved her life.

Since that fateful day, Mandy Galloway has welcomed three grandchildren into her family, a poignant reminder of the second chance she received. The RNLI continues to play a crucial role in maritime safety, with 9,058 lifeboats launched in the UK and 1,172 of those in Scotland in 2025 alone, saving 272 lives that year. Each rescue tells a story of courage and community, and Mandy’s is one of survival against the odds.

As we reflect on Mandy’s experience, it serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of the sea and the importance of safety precautions while engaging in water sports. While she has moved forward with her life, the memories of that day linger, a testament to the fragility of life and the heroes who stand ready to respond in times of crisis.
