Marco Silva says Wayne Rooney still has Everton future with DC United move close

Sky Sports News understands Rooney is in advanced talks with the Washington side paving the way for the 32-year old to end his 16-year stint in the Premier League and sign a two-year, £3.8m-a-year deal.

But Silva, who was appointed Everton head coach last week, will talk to Rooney before any move is confirmed, although he admitted the final decision will be the former England captain’s.

The Portuguese said at his first Everton news conference: “He has already started his deal (talks).

“Rooney is a club legend and we need to understand everything. The door is open every time for him.

“I will talk with him, see everything that’s happening at the moment and after it’s Wayne’s decision.”

Sky Sports News also understands an agreement will allow for Rooney to return to Goodison Park at a later date to take up a coaching role.

Director of football Marcel Brands said: “There is a possibility he will leave. He is talking with Washington, it is not a secret.

“We will also talk with him. If this is a move he wants to make and the next step in his career then I hope he will return when he’s finished there because I think he’s still a legend at this club.

“I always hoped that at PSV, and hope to do that here to use the legends in the future of the club.”
