Marwell Zoo Faces Challenges with Runaway Capybara and New Rhino Calf

On March 24, 2026
marwell zoo — GB news

Marwell Zoo in Hampshire is facing a dual narrative of concern and joy as it searches for a runaway capybara named Samba, while simultaneously celebrating the birth of a baby white rhino.

Samba, just nine months old, escaped from a temporary holding area and has been spotted roaming approximately two miles from the zoo. The zoo’s staff are working diligently to locate Samba, emphasizing the importance of reuniting her with her sister, Tango, who was found nearby. Laura Read, a representative from the zoo, stated, “They do need to be back together. They are social animals and live in groups, so it’s really important we reunite them.”

On a brighter note, Marwell Zoo welcomed a new addition to its family with the birth of a baby white rhino on March 15, coinciding with Mother’s Day. The calf’s mother, Zahra, joined the zoo in 2021 and is the youngest of the zoo’s four white rhinos. The father, Jabari, arrived from Dublin in 2015. This birth is part of the European Ex Situ breeding programme, aimed at conserving endangered species.

In a heartwarming moment, Peggy Lill, a resident from Colten Care’s Avon Reach care home, visited the zoo to see the meerkats, which she has a particular fondness for, having a collection of meerkat ornaments gifted by her granddaughter. Peggy described her visit as “an absolutely wonderful day that I’ll always treasure,” highlighting the joy that such experiences can bring.

As the zoo navigates these contrasting events, the community remains engaged and hopeful for Samba’s safe return. The emotional stakes are high, not just for the animals but for the visitors who cherish the connections they form with them. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the ongoing search for Samba, but the zoo is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all its residents.
