In a thrilling finish at the Valspar Championship held at the Copperhead Course in Innisbrook Resort, Palm Harbor, Florida, Matt Fitzpatrick emerged victorious, securing his first PGA Tour title since 2023. Fitzpatrick’s final score of 11 under par was enough to edge out his competitors, with a crucial birdie on the 18th hole sealing his win by just one stroke.
This victory marks a significant turnaround for Fitzpatrick, who had faced disappointment just a week prior at the Players Championship, where he finished a stroke short after a bogey on the final hole. Reflecting on his performance, Fitzpatrick expressed, “To come away with a win this week is really special, considering last week’s performance as well.”
Fitzpatrick’s consistent play over the weekend, shooting rounds of 68 and 69, showcased his skill and determination. He finished ahead of David Lipsky, who took second place at 10 under par, and Jordan Smith, who finished third at 9 under par. A trio of players, including Marco Penge, Xander Schauffele, and Sungjae Im, tied for fourth at 8 under par.
With this win, Fitzpatrick has now claimed a total of three PGA Tour titles, a testament to his growing prowess in the sport. He is expected to move back into the world’s top 10 rankings following this victory, further solidifying his status among the elite players in golf.
As he prepares for the upcoming Masters, Fitzpatrick will take a two-week break to recharge and strategize. He acknowledged the difference between winning on the PGA Tour and what it takes to succeed in a major tournament, stating, “I’m obviously very confident in my game right now but what it takes to win a major is very different to what it takes to win on the PGA Tour.”
Fitzpatrick’s journey to this victory has been marked by resilience and growth, and as he steps into the next chapter of his season, golf fans eagerly await what he will achieve at the Masters.
