Each ‘Cards’ meal includes a pack of four hand-illustrated cards, alongside a free food item, making it a delightful surprise for customers. With 24 unique designs to collect, the promotion taps into the nostalgia that many fans associate with the brand. It’s not just about the food; it’s about the memories and the stories that come with each card, which are categorized into characters, fans, retro, and legendary categories.

As Andrew Long, a key figure in the campaign, noted, “Nostalgia has become real cultural currency, and McDonald’s has always been a part of that story.” This promotion is a testament to that sentiment, as it seeks to blend the past with the present, offering something fresh and exciting for both new and longtime fans. The cards are not included in Happy Meals, but can be obtained by ordering specific meals, a strategic move to engage a broader audience.

The excitement doesn’t stop at collecting; the promotion also boasts over £4 million in prizes, with a rare 25th card featuring Ronald McDonald unlocking an instant £10,000 prize. This element of surprise and potential reward adds an extra layer of thrill for collectors and casual fans alike. “We wanted to take that nostalgia and give fans something fresh and new in the form of iconic Cards,” Long added, emphasizing the innovative approach behind the campaign.

The project has been in development for two years, showcasing McDonald’s commitment to understanding and integrating into collector culture. To ensure authenticity, the campaign has partnered with ACE Grading, a company specializing in card authentication, further enhancing the value of the collectibles. Each card also includes codes for a digital collection in the McDonald’s app, merging the physical and digital realms of collecting.

The campaign kicked off with a pre-launch ‘hype’ phase that focused on collector communities, generating buzz and excitement ahead of the official launch. As fans immerse themselves in this new collectible culture, the anticipation builds for what McDonald’s has in store next. “We’ve immersed ourselves in card culture and we couldn’t be more excited for the McDonald’s fans to do the same!” Long expressed, encapsulating the enthusiasm that surrounds this initiative.

As the promotion unfolds, McDonald’s continues to bridge the gap between nostalgia and modern-day engagement, inviting fans to relive cherished memories while creating new ones.
