Mco airport

On May 2, 2026, Spirit Airlines announced it would suspend all operations, leaving thousands of travelers stranded at Orlando International Airport (MCO). The sudden shutdown has triggered a scramble for alternative travel arrangements as passengers grapple with canceled flights and the uncertainty of refunds.

In total, 237 flights to 46 destinations were scheduled to operate from MCO, impacting tens of thousands of passengers. About 17,000 employees now find themselves without jobs due to this abrupt closure. The airline’s financial struggles—exacerbated by rising jet fuel costs and the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic—culminated in this unprecedented decision.

Passengers were quickly advised not to go to the airport since no customer service would be available. Many found themselves facing a harsh reality: they had no way home. “It’s crazy. Now I’m stranded. No way home,” said Michael Wilkes, one of the affected travelers.

Spirit Airlines has been a staple at MCO for over 33 years, but recent negotiations for federal financial assistance collapsed just before the shutdown. The airline’s last-minute attempts to stabilize its finances failed, and now it stands as the first major U.S. airline in 25 years to go out of business due to such financial issues.

The past day alone saw Spirit fly more than 50,000 passengers, highlighting the suddenness of this crisis. Many travelers are seeking refunds; those who booked directly will receive them automatically via credit or debit cards, while third-party bookings require direct contact with those providers.

As travelers look for alternatives, other airlines like JetBlue and Southwest are stepping in with special pricing for impacted Spirit customers. “We have to go home. We have work, we have things we have to get back to,” Amber Savinon explained, reflecting the urgency felt by many.

The Orlando International Airport has expressed its sadness over losing Spirit as a partner but emphasizes its commitment to supporting stranded passengers during this turbulent time. In the meantime, officials continue to calculate how much Spirit owes the airport—a figure that remains uncertain.

This situation is evolving rapidly as passengers seek solutions amidst chaos. With flight cancellations affecting so many lives, the focus now shifts to how quickly these individuals can find their way back home.
