“When I was offered the chance to re-imagine Monarch of the Glen, I leapt at it,” said Jeremy Brock, the series’ creator and executive producer. This beloved Scottish comedy-drama, originally aired from 2000 to 2005, is making a comeback with a new lead character and storyline on Channel 5.
Set against the stunning backdrop of the Scottish Highlands, the reboot introduces Isla Campbell, a high-flying London lawyer returning home for her estranged father’s funeral. But it’s not just grief that awaits her; she discovers she has inherited a million-pound debt and a brother who’s unwilling to let go of their ancestral home.
“Hope and joy are a currency in short supply right now, and the Highlands—one of the most magical places on Earth—felt like exactly the right home for them,” Brock added. The original Monarch of the Glen captured hearts with its rich family saga, and this new version aims to do just that.
Key details about the reboot:
- The series will consist of six parts.
- Filming will take place in Scotland and Northern Ireland later this year.
- The original series ran for 64 episodes across seven series.
- Ecosse Films, known for producing the original show, is behind this fresh reimagining.
- Casting details have yet to be revealed.
Robert Bernstein expressed excitement about the project: “Monarch of the Glen holds a very special place in our hearts, and we are absolutely thrilled to be bringing this beloved show to the next generation of viewers.” Meanwhile, Susanne Simpson noted that she believes this new version will resonate well with American audiences who enjoy Masterpiece PBS productions.
The anticipation around Isla’s journey through familial ties, financial struggles, and her connection to the land promises to deliver warmth, humor, and romance—elements that made its predecessor so cherished. As fans await more news about casting and release dates, one thing is clear: Monarch of the Glen is ready for its next chapter in storytelling.
