Brighton Residents Concerned as National Express Continues to Use Old Steine for Coach Services

What Happened

Last week, Brighton and Hove City Council confirmed a new coach parking location on Stroudley Road, near Brighton Station, following complaints from residents living on Old Steine. The decision came after the National Express coach station was relocated from Pool Valley due to the Royal Albion fire and the Valley Gardens regeneration project, leading to increased noise issues for local residents.

Why It Matters

Despite the council’s efforts to alleviate the situation by encouraging National Express and other providers to utilize the new Stroudley Road stop, long-term resident Gary Farmer reported that the new location is not being used effectively. He stated that coaches continue to pick up passengers from Old Steine, which he claims is not a viable solution to the noise problem. National Express has confirmed that it will maintain operations from Old Steine due to operational requirements, indicating a disconnect between the council’s plans and the company’s logistical realities.

What’s Next

Moving forward, the council plans to continue discussions with National Express to address the ongoing issues related to coach parking and noise in the area. However, with the company citing additional journey times and costs as barriers to using the new stop, it remains uncertain how effective these discussions will be in resolving the concerns of local residents.
