In a notable shift, the Nationwide Building Society is set to distribute free £100 cash bonuses to eligible members in May 2026. This initiative has sparked a wave of bank switching across the UK, with consumers increasingly seeking better financial deals.

More than 319,000 customers switched banks in the first quarter of 2026—up an impressive 43% from the previous year. Nationwide emerged as the most popular choice during this period, gaining over 64,000 net customers. This surge reflects a growing trend where individuals are prioritizing customer loyalty and financial incentives.

“Because we don’t have shareholders, we can give more back to our members,” said Tom Riley from Nationwide. The Fairer Share payment has been a staple for three consecutive years, helping to solidify the mutual structure’s appeal.

Meanwhile, competitors like Halifax faced challenges, losing over 25,000 customers recently. HSBC and Santander UK also saw declines of more than 20,000 and nearly 24,000 customers respectively. Rachel Springall from Moneyfacts noted, “It is incredibly positive to see more consumers vote with their feet and ditch their current account.”

This shift comes at a time when many are grappling with rising living costs. Springall pointed out that “consumers may struggle with the cost of living and need to quickly find ways to make their money go further.” Switching current accounts could be a wise move for many.

The Fairer Share Payment is typically announced in May each year, and as it approaches, anticipation builds among potential switchers. Nationwide has also committed to keeping its branches open for at least the next four years—an effort to maintain accessibility for its growing member base.

As this trend unfolds, observers will be watching closely to see how other banks respond to this competitive pressure. With cash bonuses and attractive offers becoming commonplace in banking, the landscape is shifting rapidly.
