What Happened
A new footpath is set to be constructed connecting RAF Cosford and Cosford railway station, following Shropshire Council’s successful acquisition of £350,000 from Active Travel England. This development aims to provide a safe walking route for the thousands of visitors attending events at RAF Cosford, particularly during the annual Cosford Air Show.
Why It Matters
The construction of the footpath addresses a significant safety concern, as many attendees currently walk along the road without a designated safe space. The project will also include the installation of new street lighting, enhancing safety for pedestrians. Rob Wilson, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for transport and economic growth, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating it will offer residents and visitors more travel options and alleviate pressure on local roads, especially during peak events.
What’s Next
Construction is scheduled to begin at the end of June 2026, with completion expected in time for the school summer holidays in July 2026. During the construction phase, the speed limit on the road will be temporarily reduced to 30mph to ensure the safety of the workforce. Discussions are also underway with West Midlands Rail Executive to manage the increased pedestrian traffic to RAF Cosford.
