Parachute: British Army and RAF Execute Largest Drop in Over a Decade
In a significant display of military capability, over 270 members of the British Army and Royal Air Force participated in a historic parachute drop on Salisbury Plain, Wiltshire, marking the largest such operation in the UK in over a decade.
The exercise, which took place on March 30, 2026, saw soldiers jump from an altitude of 800 feet, with four waves of 69 paratroopers descending from A400M Atlas transport aircraft. This operation is particularly noteworthy as it is the largest military parachute drop since 2015.
Brigadier Ed Cartwright, who oversaw the operation, expressed the importance of such exercises, stating, “Parachuting is the only capability that puts troops on the ground almost anywhere in the world, at speed and at reach.” His sentiments were echoed by L/Cpl Robin Nichols, who described the atmosphere in the hangar prior to the jump: “It was quite an exciting time, you could feel it in the hangar this morning, the tension, a little bit.”
During the drop, a total of 24 tonnes of weapons, ammunition, and food were also delivered, showcasing the logistical capabilities of the forces involved. The A400M has taken over as the military’s low-level parachuting aircraft following the retirement of the C-130 in 2023, highlighting a shift in operational capabilities.
The training exercise was part of a routine effort to rebuild parachuting capabilities amid growing global threats. Brigadier Cartwright emphasized the need for readiness, stating, “It’s a dangerous world and we need to give our policymakers and government options to do things about that.”
Troops demonstrated their ability to deploy a company of about 200 to 300 paratroopers within two days, while almost an entire battlegroup, roughly 1,000 troops, can be mobilized within five days. Furthermore, the bulk of a brigade, about 5,000 soldiers, can be deployed within approximately 20 days.
As the military continues to adapt to evolving challenges, this exercise not only serves as a testament to the capabilities of the British Army and RAF but also underscores the importance of maintaining readiness in an unpredictable world.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding future exercises or additional capabilities that may be developed as a result of this operation.
