Significant Funding for Mary’s Meals
The People’s Postcode Lottery has raised over £7 million for Mary’s Meals, a charity dedicated to providing meals to children in need. This funding has been instrumental in ensuring that 478,968 children receive nutritious meals every school day across various countries.
Impact of the Funding
Mary’s Meals serves daily meals to more than three million children globally, with over 39 million meals served to date in 16 countries. The charity’s operations have been significantly supported by the funding from lottery players, which has facilitated its reach in countries including Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Zambia, Madagascar, Ethiopia, and South Sudan.
Half of the children receiving Mary’s Meals are girls, highlighting the charity’s commitment to gender equality in education and nutrition. The decade-long partnership with the People’s Postcode Lottery has allowed Mary’s Meals to expand its operations and impact.
Community Support and Reactions
Laura Chow from the People’s Postcode Lottery expressed, “It’s fantastic to know that for a decade our players have supported the essential work of Mary’s Meals- and have now raised an incredible £7 million to help children across the globe access nutritious meals.” This sentiment reflects the positive impact that community support can have on charitable initiatives.
Gemma Love from Mary’s Meals added, “We are incredibly grateful to People’s Postcode Lottery players in Devon, whose ongoing support is helping us reach more children than ever before with a daily school meal that encourages learning, brings hope and changes lives.” Such statements underscore the importance of continued support from the community.
Personal Stories
Children benefiting from these meals have shared their experiences, with one child, Efigénia, stating, “With school meals, I feel good because even with a lack of food at home, here at school I have a meal and I can study.” This highlights the critical role that school meals play in the lives of children in vulnerable situations.
As the partnership continues, Mary’s Meals remains committed to reaching even more children. Gemma Love remarked, “Seeing the difference this support makes for children and communities inspires us to keep going and to reach even more children in the years ahead.” This dedication reflects the ongoing need for support in addressing food security and educational access for children worldwide.
