On May 1, 2026, two lucky savers woke up as millionaires thanks to the latest Premium Bonds prize draw. They joined the ranks of jackpot winners, with the thrill of unexpected wealth overshadowed by recent scandals involving National Savings and Investments (NS&I) that have deeply affected bereaved families.
The first winner, a bondholder from Suffolk, held bond number 567VN857011. This bond was purchased back in January 2024. The second millionaire hailed from the beautiful Highlands and Islands, having bought their winning bond number 643SE292364 in September 2025. Both winners received a knock on the door from Agent Million, an NS&I employee who travels across the UK to deliver life-changing news.
May’s draw saw a total of 5,947,523 prizes worth a staggering £376,180,825. The total amount won across the country reached £1,819,000. With odds of winning set at 23,000 to 1 for each £1 saved in Premium Bonds, these jackpot winners are among a fortunate few.
However, this moment of joy comes amid serious concerns. NS&I has faced scrutiny due to operational failures affecting around 37,500 bereaved families who experienced delays in accessing their Premium Bonds. Trust is crucial in financial services — and as Dan Coatsworth pointed out, this scandal may leave savers feeling uneasy about NS&I.
Despite these issues, over 99% of prizes have been successfully paid to winners since draws began in 1957. Yet millions of unclaimed Premium Bonds prizes linger out there — a reminder that not all luck is realized.
Andrew Westhead from NS&I encourages savers to check their winnings: “The quickest way to check if you have won a prize is to use our Premium Bonds prize checker app or even ask Alexa from the second working day of each month onwards.” This simple act could change lives — just like it did for those two new millionaires.
The future remains uncertain for many bondholders impacted by recent events. But as these two jackpot winners celebrate their newfound wealth, they embody both hope and challenge within the realm of financial services.
