How it unfolded

As the sun set on April 6, 2026, music lovers across the UK tuned in with anticipation for the annual Radio X Best Of British countdown. For the past decade, Radio X has invited listeners to cast their votes for their favorite British songs of all time, and this year, the excitement was palpable as the poll expanded from 100 to an impressive 500 songs. The atmosphere was electric, with fans eager to see how their cherished tracks would fare in this comprehensive celebration of British music.

In a stunning display of loyalty and nostalgia, Oasis’ iconic anthem ‘Live Forever’ was crowned the greatest British song of all time for the fourth consecutive year. Matt Deverson, a representative from Radio X, remarked, “It’s no surprise to see ‘Live Forever’ take the crown again after such a huge year for Oasis, showing just how deeply that song still connects with people.” The song, a beacon of hope and resilience, continues to resonate with audiences, solidifying its place in the hearts of many.

Following closely in the rankings, Queen’s legendary ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ secured second place for the third year in a row, proving that its operatic brilliance and emotional depth remain timeless. Meanwhile, The Stone Roses’ ‘I Am The Resurrection’ climbed to third place, a testament to its enduring appeal and the band’s lasting influence on the British music scene.

Oasis further dominated the list, claiming both the fourth and fifth positions with ‘Slide Away’ and ‘Champagne Supernova’, respectively. This remarkable achievement underscores the band’s significant impact on British music, with their songs continuing to inspire new generations of listeners. Fleetwood Mac’s ‘The Chain’ made its debut in the top ten at ninth place, marking a milestone for the band and showcasing the diverse range of music that resonates with the audience.

In a nod to the heavy metal genre, Ozzy Osbourne’s tracks ‘Crazy Train’ and ‘Mama I’m Coming Home’ made their mark at positions 231 and 409, respectively. Additionally, Black Sabbath’s ‘Paranoid’ entered the top 100 for the first time, landing at position 69, highlighting the enduring legacy of these iconic artists. The presence of these classic tracks alongside contemporary hits illustrates the rich tapestry of British music history.

Newer artists also made their presence felt in this year’s countdown. Wolf Alice’s ‘The Sofa’ debuted at number 21, becoming the highest-placed new release. This inclusion signifies a shift in the musical landscape, as newer generations of artists continue to carve out their place in the storied history of British music.

Geographically, London emerged as the most represented city with 148 songs from 39 different artists, reflecting the capital’s vibrant music scene. Manchester followed closely, contributing 91 songs from 14 artists, showcasing the city’s rich musical heritage. Interestingly, over 26% of the songs included in the poll were released in the 1990s, a decade that continues to shape the sound of contemporary British music.

As the countdown concluded, it became clear that the Radio X Best of British poll is not just a celebration of music; it is a reflection of the cultural landscape of the UK. The songs that resonate with listeners tell stories of love, loss, and the human experience, connecting generations through shared memories and emotions. This year’s results serve as a reminder of the power of music to unite us all, transcending time and trends.
