RAF personnel participated in Anzac Day ceremonies across Harrogate and RAF Lakenheath, honoring the sacrifices of military members past and present. This year’s observance also highlighted their ongoing involvement in modern conflicts.
The ceremony in Harrogate paid tribute to 97 Royal Australian Air Force and 23 Royal New Zealand Air Force servicemen, emphasizing the bond shared among allied forces. Wing Commander David Buckingham expressed pride, stating, “It was an honour to represent Royal Air Force Leeming at the Anzac Day Ceremony.”
At RAF Lakenheath, an F-15E Strike Eagle was specially painted to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Operation El Dorado Canyon—an operation launched in response to a tragic bombing incident in West Berlin.
Meanwhile, RAF troops have been actively engaged in the Middle East conflict, intercepting over 100 Iranian drones and missiles at a coalition base. These operations underline the UK’s commitment to countering threats in a volatile region.
The situation is dire—on some days, the coalition base faced attacks from as many as 28 drones and missiles. Al Carns, a military leader on the ground, remarked, “The base would probably be a smouldering wreck if it wasn’t for you guys.”
In light of these challenges, discussions are underway within the Ministry of Defence about expanding the UK’s counter-drone capabilities. Air Chief Marshal Harv Smyth confirmed this ongoing dialogue: “Yes, that’s definitely a discussion that we’re having.”
The observance of Anzac Day serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by armed forces worldwide while also reflecting the realities of contemporary military operations.
