Resident Doctors Strikes: A Six-Day Walkout Begins in England

What does the latest strike by resident doctors in England signify for the future of healthcare in the country? As they prepare to walk out for six days starting April 7, 2026, the answer is clear: a deepening crisis in negotiations over pay and working conditions.

Resident doctors have rejected a final offer from the health secretary, prompting this strike, which will last from 7am on April 7 to 6.59 on April 13. This marks the 15th time these dedicated professionals have taken industrial action in their ongoing campaign for full pay restoration.

According to the British Medical Association (BMA), the strike could cost the NHS an estimated £300 million, a staggering figure that underscores the gravity of the situation. The BMA has attributed the decision to strike directly to the government, stating that negotiations have faltered over crucial issues like pay progression and nodal point reform.

In their pursuit of fair compensation, the BMA is seeking a 26% pay rise to address the erosion of salaries since 2008-09. In contrast, the government has offered a mere 3.5% increase for the upcoming year, a proposal that many doctors find unacceptable.

Wes Streeting, the health secretary, expressed disappointment over the BMA’s decision, while a source within the BMA remarked, “When the government intimated two weeks ago that it would take three years for doctors to get the money, that was the beginning of the end.” This sentiment reflects the frustration felt by many within the medical community.

Dr. Jack Fletcher, a representative of the resident doctors, noted that negotiations had been progressing well until recent shifts in the government’s stance. “Negotiations had been going well until two weeks ago when the government began to shift the goalposts,” he stated, highlighting the uncertainty that now surrounds the discussions.

The implications of this strike extend beyond financial considerations; they raise critical questions about patient care and NHS operations. As the strike approaches, the impact on services remains uncertain, with many patients left wondering how their care will be affected.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding whether further negotiations will take place before the strike begins. The BMA has indicated that a deal could only be reached if the government agrees to the full £700 million in funding for the financial year starting next week, a condition that seems unlikely given the current impasse.

As the clock ticks down to the start of the strike, the future of resident doctors and the NHS hangs in the balance, with both sides needing to find common ground to avert further disruption.
