What Happened

Capital&Centric has unveiled its vision for the residential-led development of the historic Cannon Brewery site in Sheffield. The developer plans to construct 252 design-led apartments as part of the first phase of a larger project that aims to deliver approximately 500 homes. The brewery, which ceased operations in 1999, will be transformed into a vibrant community space featuring co-working areas, a residents’ lounge, and an urban park.

Why It Matters

This redevelopment is significant as it aims to preserve the brewery’s historic character while introducing modern living spaces and amenities. The project has received £11.67 million from the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority’s brownfield housing fund, highlighting the importance of revitalizing underutilized urban spaces. Tom Wilmot, joint managing director of Capital&Centric, emphasized the project’s potential to foster a sense of community, stating that it will create a neighborhood where residents can engage with one another and enjoy various local amenities.

What’s Next

Capital&Centric is collaborating with Sheffield City Council to bring this vision to fruition. The plans include restoring the iconic water tower and reimagining the historic brew house into office spaces and food and beverage areas. As the project progresses, it is expected to attract new residents and businesses, contributing to the economic and social revitalization of the Neepsend area.
