On March 20, 2026, the boxing world was rocked by the tragic news of Ricky Hatton’s death at the age of 46. Just before this devastating event, Hatton had been planning an exhibition boxing match in Dubai, a testament to his enduring passion for the sport that made him a household name. However, behind the scenes, he was grappling with significant challenges that would ultimately lead to his untimely demise.

Hatton was discovered in his home in Hyde, near Manchester, by his manager, Paul Speak. The circumstances surrounding his death were harrowing; he was found hanged with a bedsheet. An inquest at the South Manchester coroners’ court revealed that Hatton had been suffering from Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain disease often found in athletes with a history of repetitive brain trauma, particularly boxers.

As the investigation unfolded, it became clear that Hatton’s struggles extended beyond physical ailments. He had a documented history of mental health issues and substance use following his illustrious boxing career, which saw him win 45 of his 48 professional bouts. His family reported that he experienced significant memory loss and confusion, symptoms that are all too common in individuals afflicted with CTE.

During the inquest, coroner Alison Mutch stated, “I cannot be satisfied that he intended to take his own life.” This statement underscored the complexities surrounding Hatton’s death, as the coroner could not deliver a verdict of suicide due to the influence of CTE and alcohol at the time of his passing. It was revealed that Hatton had been drinking heavily, exceeding the legal drink-drive limit, just hours before his death.

Hatton’s son, Campbell Hatton, reflected on his father’s post-boxing struggles, saying, “Post-boxing, my dad had mental health issues and also issues with alcohol and cocaine.” This candid admission highlights the often-overlooked reality that many athletes face after their careers end, grappling with identity and mental health challenges.

Jennifer Dooley, a family member, shared a more personal side of Hatton, stating, “He was very much the fun dad and the girls loved that about him.” This sentiment paints a picture of a man who, despite his struggles, was deeply loved by his family and had moments of joy that will be cherished forever.

The tragic loss of Ricky Hatton serves as a poignant reminder of the hidden battles many athletes face, particularly in relation to mental health and the long-term effects of their sports. His legacy as a boxing champion will forever be intertwined with the importance of addressing mental health issues, not just in sports but in society as a whole.
