Roger Black Chats To Gerry & Dave

When we say Gerry & Dave aren’t the fastest, we’re not normally talking about athletics. However, today we are. Because we got a living legend of the track and field, someone who has excelled despite all setbacks, it’s Roger Anthony Black MBE

Roger has 15 medals from major senior athletics competitions as well as 2 European junior championship gold medals. He’s won individual silver medals in the 400 metres sprint at both the Olympic Games and World Championships, 2 individual gold medals at the European Championships, and 4 × 400 metres relay gold medals at both the World and European Championships…phew!

Who can forget the 400m Gold Medal at European Championships in 1986? Well, people who are too young. So, if you’re too young, check this out…

Since he retired in 1998, there shows no signs of things slowing down in his life. In fact, it’s quite the opposite.

After he hung up his running shoes Roger quickly turned to telly. The first thing he worked on wasI Newsround with fellow athlete Iwan Thomas reporting on childhood obesity. He went on to work regularly on programmes such as Tomorrow’s World and Grandstand.

In 2004 he was one of the celebrities that took part in the pro-am dancing contest Strictly Come Dancing on BBC One. In September 2006, he took part in BBC One‘s Celebrity MasterChef programme, reaching the final along with Matt Dawson and Hardeep Singh Kohli.

In all that he does, he gives his best. Which is how he came to work as a television presenter and motivational speaker.

In 1995 Southampton University gave Black an honorary degree and he was also rewarded by Queen Elizabeth II with an MBE.

We were excited to chat to such an inspirational chappy, and to hear about what he’s getting up to these days.
