Sadiq Khan Faces Security Breach After Armed Police Leave Guns Outside Home
In a troubling incident that raises serious questions about security protocols, a bag containing firearms was left outside the home of Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, in Clapham, South London, on Tuesday night around 9:40 PM. The bag, which was discovered by a member of the public, contained a Heckler & Koch submachine gun, a Glock pistol, a Taser, and ammunition.
The alarming find was reported to the police by Jordan Griffiths, whose girlfriend initially stumbled upon the heavy bag, thinking it might be filled with coins. “I could not believe my eyes. There was a handgun in the front pocket and a submachine gun in the main part of the bag,” Griffiths recounted, emphasizing the shock of the situation.
In response to the incident, five officers from the Metropolitan Police have been temporarily suspended from frontline duties while an investigation is underway. The Metropolitan Police’s Directorate of Professional Standards is currently reviewing the circumstances surrounding this serious breach of security.
Sadiq Khan, who receives 24-hour armed protection due to ongoing threats to his safety, has faced scrutiny before regarding the security measures in place around him. His spokesperson commented on the incident, stating, “This is a very serious incident, which has been referred to the Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards.”
There are 15 armed officers assigned to Khan’s protection team, underscoring the heightened risks associated with his position. The police arrived at the scene within seven minutes of the call, highlighting the urgency with which they responded to the alarming discovery.
As the investigation unfolds, the implications of this security lapse are significant, not only for Khan but also for the public’s perception of safety in London. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by public officials in maintaining their safety amidst rising threats.
Details remain unconfirmed as authorities continue to investigate how such a critical error could occur in the security detail of a high-profile figure like Sadiq Khan. The public awaits further updates on the measures that will be taken to prevent such incidents in the future.
