Si King Reflects on His Journey and the Legacy of Dave Myers

Si King, born in Kibblesworth, Gateshead, has always been a figure of resilience and creativity. Growing up, he faced the profound loss of his father at a young age, which deeply affected his relationship with food. This loss became a coping mechanism for both him and his mother, shaping his early years and influencing his future in unexpected ways. It was during these formative years that King began to navigate the complexities of life, ultimately leading him to the world of television and cooking.

As one half of the beloved duo known as The Hairy Bikers, Si King has shared countless adventures with his partner Dave Myers. Their journey together began in the early 1990s when they first crossed paths on the set of a Catherine Cookson TV drama. Little did they know that this meeting would spark a partnership that would see them ride 650,000 miles together, exploring the culinary landscape of the UK and beyond. Their camaraderie was not just about food; it was a testament to friendship and shared experiences that resonated with audiences.

In a poignant moment on the BBC’s Desert Island Discs, Si King selected eight tracks that held deep personal significance, including The Chieftains’ “Boil the Breakfast Early,” a song that reminded him of his parents. This selection served as a reflective journey through his life, highlighting the moments that shaped him, both personally and professionally. King described his grief for Myers, who tragically passed away from cancer in 2024 at the age of 66, as a private experience, yet one that has profoundly influenced his life and work.

The loss of his dear friend and collaborator has left an indelible mark on King. He recalls, “We grieved at the stovetop,” illustrating how their shared love for cooking became a sanctuary during times of sorrow. The first-ever Dave Day, held in 2024 to honor Myers, was a cathartic experience for King, who expressed that it was a simple yet powerful expression of love and affection for both Myers and their collective legacy as The Hairy Bikers.

Reflecting on their journey, King noted, “It was all about the fight [against Myers’ condition], and keeping it [life] going, keeping the wheels on as far as we could, because clearly, they had come off.” This statement encapsulates the essence of their partnership, marked by resilience and an unwavering commitment to each other and their craft. It took about three years for The Hairy Bikers to be commissioned, a testament to their dedication and the slow development of their show idea.

As King continues to navigate life without Myers, he faces his own challenges, including a significant health journey of his own. After undergoing an operation, he experienced 18 months of fatigue, a period that tested his strength and resolve. During this time, he humorously recounted taking two and a half hours to make a cup of tea, a reflection of the slow pace of recovery and the importance of small victories.

Looking ahead, Si King remains committed to honoring the legacy of his friend while continuing to share their love for food and adventure with the world. Observers note that his journey is not just about cooking; it is about celebrating friendship, resilience, and the memories that bind us together. As he moves forward, the spirit of Dave Myers will undoubtedly remain a guiding force in his life, inspiring him to keep the wheels turning in their shared culinary journey.
