OpenAI has announced the shutdown of its Sora AI video generator, just six months after its public launch in late 2024. The app quickly soared to the No. 1 position on Apple’s app store, captivating users with its ability to create hyper-realistic videos featuring over 200 licensed Disney characters.
Launched initially as a bonus for ChatGPT Pro and Plus users in December 2024, Sora was designed to empower creativity and community among its users. However, it faced significant backlash for generating violent and racist content, along with deepfakes and misinformation, which ultimately led to its downfall.
In September 2025, OpenAI introduced Sora 2 and a stand-alone app, but the excitement was short-lived. Just three months later, the company decided to shut down the platform, leaving many users disappointed. “What you made with Sora mattered, and we know this news is disappointing,” stated OpenAI in their announcement.
The closure of Sora has also prompted Disney to exit a $1 billion deal with OpenAI, which allowed users to create videos featuring beloved characters from its extensive library. A spokesperson for Disney expressed respect for OpenAI’s decision, acknowledging the rapid advancements in the AI field.
OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, emphasized that while they are stepping away from Sora, the company is not exiting the AI video business entirely. They plan to share more information about the shutdown timeline and how users can preserve their created videos.
As the dust settles on this unexpected closure, questions linger regarding Disney’s investment in OpenAI and how both companies will navigate the evolving landscape of AI technology. Observers are keen to see how OpenAI will redirect its focus and what new opportunities may arise from this shift.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the specific timeline for the shutdown and the future of user-generated content created through Sora. For now, the community that formed around Sora must grapple with the loss of a platform that once promised to revolutionize video creation.
