Stephen Robinson Takes Charge at Aberdeen
“When this opportunity arose, there was no way I could turn it down,” stated Stephen Robinson upon his appointment as the new manager of Aberdeen Football Club. His transition from St Mirren to Aberdeen marks a significant step in his managerial career, following a successful tenure at St Mirren.
Robinson’s departure was officially announced on March 12, 2026, after he led St Mirren for four years, achieving notable successes including a Premier Sports Cup victory and a historic fifth-place finish in the William Hill Premiership. This achievement returned St Mirren to European football for the first time in 37 years, highlighting Robinson’s impact on the club.
During his time at St Mirren, Robinson was instrumental in guiding the team to their first top-six finish in the current league structure, as well as their highest top-flight finish since the 1984-85 season. His leadership was characterized by a strong tactical approach and the ability to foster a competitive spirit within the squad.
Aberdeen’s chairman, Dave Cormack, expressed confidence in Robinson’s capabilities, describing him as a proven leader with a strong track record. Cormack emphasized the club’s desire to re-establish a clear identity, stating, “There is a strong desire to re-establish a clear identity for our club, to become harder to play against and restore competitiveness in our matches.”
Robinson has signed a contract with Aberdeen that will keep him at the club until the summer of 2029. The decision to bring him on board was facilitated by Aberdeen triggering a compensation clause in his contract with St Mirren. Alongside Robinson, Brian Kerr will join as his assistant, further solidifying the management team.
In the wake of Robinson’s departure, St Mirren has appointed Craig McLeish, Jamie Langfield, and Allan McManus to take interim charge until a permanent replacement is found. Currently, St Mirren sits in 10th place in the league, five points below Aberdeen, indicating the challenges that lie ahead for the interim management team.
Robinson’s move to Aberdeen is seen as a pivotal moment in his career, as he takes on the challenge of managing a club with a rich history and high expectations. His previous successes at St Mirren have set a strong foundation, and his new role will be closely watched by fans and analysts alike.
As Robinson embarks on this new chapter, the football community anticipates how his leadership will shape Aberdeen’s future and whether he can replicate the success he achieved at St Mirren.
