The Open, one of golf’s most prestigious tournaments, is gearing up for an exciting return to Royal Birkdale, Southport, Merseyside, from July 12-19, 2026. This year, the event not only promises thrilling golf but also a unique cocktail competition that invites both professional and amateur bartenders to showcase their creativity.
Haotong Li, a rising star in the golfing world, made headlines during his debut at The Open in 2017 when he finished third, recording a remarkable final-round score of 63. This achievement marked the lowest major round by a Chinese golfer, solidifying Li’s status as one of the finest talents to emerge from China. As he prepares for the upcoming tournament, fans are eager to see if he can replicate or even surpass his previous performance.
The Open has partnered with Ben Lomond Gin, which has been the official gin of the tournament since 2023. This collaboration enhances the event’s atmosphere, blending the rich tradition of golf with the art of mixology. Elsie Cinnamond, a representative of Ben Lomond Gin, expressed her enthusiasm for the cocktail competition, stating, “Our official serve of The Open campaign has been hugely successful in the past, and we’re excited to open it up even further this year by inviting both professional bartenders and those with a passion for mixology to take part.”
Participants in the cocktail competition are encouraged to submit their creations through a dedicated portal, with the winner receiving VIP tickets to the championships along with a cash prize. Last year’s winner crafted a cocktail inspired by his grandmother, showcasing the personal stories that often accompany the art of cocktail making. Cinnamond added, “Taste is obviously important, but at Ben Lomond Gin we believe the greatest serves come with a great story, and we are always excited to hear the inspiration behind each cocktail.”
As the tournament approaches, the excitement continues to build among golf enthusiasts and cocktail lovers alike. The Open’s unique blend of sports and culinary creativity is expected to draw a diverse crowd, eager to witness top golfers like Jordan Spieth, Matt Kuchar, and Rory McIlroy compete for the coveted title.
With the event just around the corner, public entrants for the cocktail competition will be notified of the final round on May 4. This anticipation adds to the overall excitement surrounding The Open, as both golfers and bartenders prepare to showcase their skills on a grand stage.
As The Open prepares to unfold at Royal Birkdale, observers are keen to see how the tournament will balance its rich golfing heritage with the innovative spirit of mixology. The integration of these two worlds promises to create a memorable experience for all attendees, celebrating not just the sport of golf but also the stories and creativity that come with it.
