The Traitors: A Television Phenomenon Set to Continue Until 2030
“We are proud to remain faithful to The Traitors and The Celebrity Traitors until 2030,” said Kalpna Patel-Knight, a key figure in the production of the hit reality series. This statement underscores the BBC’s commitment to the franchise, which has seen remarkable success since its inception.
The Traitors, originally created in the Netherlands by IDTV, has been adapted in various countries, including the UK, where it has become a genuine television phenomenon. The fourth series, which aired in early 2026, achieved an impressive 12.5 million average viewers over 28 days, with more than half of the audience tuning in via BBC iPlayer.
In a competitive television landscape, the show’s unique format has captivated audiences. “Each series is like a murder mystery; we never change the core game, but we always play with the twists around it,” explained Mike Cotton, a producer of the series. This innovative approach has kept viewers engaged and eager for more.
The Celebrity Traitors, a spin-off that debuted in October 2025, attracted an even larger audience, averaging 14.9 million viewers. The success of both formats has led the BBC to secure a three-year deal to keep The Traitors and its celebrity counterpart on air until at least 2030, ensuring that fans will have plenty of content to look forward to.
Notably, the fourth series of The Traitors saw a 28 percent increase in viewership compared to its predecessor, with 6.6 million viewers coming from BBC iPlayer alone. This surge in popularity highlights the show’s ability to resonate with a broad audience, including 2.6 million viewers aged 16-34.
Stephen Lambert, another key figure behind the series, remarked, “The Traitors has become a genuine television phenomenon across the world, but especially in the UK, and we’re thrilled to continue the journey with the BBC.” This sentiment reflects the show’s cultural impact and its role in shaping the reality TV landscape.
As the franchise continues to grow, the BBC has announced plans for future seasons, including series five in 2027 and series six in 2028, followed by series seven in 2029 and series eight in 2030. Additionally, Celebrity Traitors series two is set to air later in 2026, with subsequent seasons planned for the following years.
While the secret traitor twist introduced in season four will not return in future seasons, the core elements that make The Traitors engaging will remain intact. As the series evolves, it will be interesting to see how producers continue to innovate while maintaining the familiar format that has drawn in millions of viewers.
