The Victim: Recent Assault Cases Highlight Ongoing Issues

What does the recent rise in assault cases tell us about the safety of the victim?

Recent incidents in Exeter, England, and Baltimore, Maryland, have raised significant concerns regarding the safety of the victim in assault cases. In Exeter, Daniel Smith pleaded guilty to assault by beating and touching a woman without her consent, with the incident occurring on February 27. The victim recognized Smith from previous negative interactions, highlighting a troubling pattern of behavior.

A passer-by intervened during the incident, allowing the victim to escape unharmed. Smith, who has a history of violence and intimidation against women, was sentenced to 24 weeks in jail and received a four-year Criminal Behaviour Order, which prohibits him from unreasonably approaching or communicating with any female.

In a separate case in Baltimore, Trillion Bryant was found guilty of attempted first-degree murder and carrying a dangerous weapon openly. This incident, which occurred in mid-August 2024, resulted in the victim, a 43-year-old man, sustaining life-threatening injuries and requiring hospitalization. The victim is still recovering and has another surgery scheduled as a result of the attack.

State’s Attorney Ivan Bates commented on the severity of Bryant’s actions, stating, “Today’s sentence ensures that the Defendant will be held fully accountable for an act of shocking and senseless violence.” This reflects a growing recognition of the need for stringent legal measures to protect victims of violent crime.

The magistrates in Smith’s case noted, “The offences are so serious, you need greater punishment than we can give,” indicating a broader concern about the adequacy of current sentencing guidelines in dealing with repeat offenders.

Smith’s vulnerabilities, including being diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and having language difficulties, complicate the narrative surrounding his actions. Nevertheless, the focus remains on the impact of his behavior on victims.

As these cases unfold, they underscore the importance of addressing the systemic issues surrounding violence against victims. The legal outcomes in both instances serve as a reminder of the ongoing challenges in ensuring safety and justice for those affected by such crimes.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding any further legal actions or support systems that may be put in place for the victims involved in these cases.
