UK Foreign Office Travel Warnings: Safety Concerns in the UAE and Updates for Portugal
“Caring for our customers and ensuring their safety is our priority,” stated a spokesperson from Hays Travel, reflecting the heightened concerns surrounding travel to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) amid escalating geopolitical tensions.
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has advised against all but essential travel to the UAE, urging travelers to steer clear of areas near security or military facilities. This advisory comes in light of the ongoing US-Israeli conflict with Iran, which has prompted a reevaluation of safety protocols for British nationals.
As travelers consider their plans, the FCDO continuously refreshes its travel guidance to keep British nationals informed of alerts and entry requirements. The spokesperson from Hays Travel reassured, “If your holiday is not affected by this advice, normal booking terms and conditions apply,” emphasizing the importance of staying informed.
In contrast, the FCDO has updated its travel advice for British travelers visiting Portugal, where passport holders can enjoy visa-free stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day timeframe. However, those planning to stay longer than 90 days must apply for an extension under exceptional circumstances.
Travelers should be aware that from April 10, 2026, the EU’s new Entry/Exit System will be operational, requiring biometric information upon entry to the Schengen zone. This development underscores the importance of understanding the evolving landscape of travel regulations.
“If you’re visiting Portugal and need to extend your visa-free stay for exceptional reasons, such as a medical emergency, you must apply to AIMA using their contact form,” the FCDO advises, highlighting the need for travelers to be proactive in their planning.
Moreover, travelers intending to visit other Schengen countries should ensure their entire visit remains within the 90-day visa-free limit, as overstaying could lead to a ban from entering Schengen countries for up to three years.
The FCDO’s updates serve as a crucial reminder for travelers to remain vigilant and informed, particularly in light of the complex international landscape that can impact travel safety.
As the situation continues to evolve, British travelers are encouraged to stay updated on travel advisories and to prioritize their safety while planning their journeys.
