As the UK enjoyed a brief respite from winter with temperatures soaring to a pleasant 16°C in Cardiff and 15°C in Ross-on-Wye, the mood is about to shift dramatically. Just before midnight on March 25, a significant weather front will sweep across the country, heralding the arrival of a snow storm that many are already bracing for.
According to the Met Office, low pressure from the Atlantic will unleash stronger winds and rain, with wintry conditions expected to begin at the stroke of midnight. Scotland is predicted to bear the brunt of the storm, with snow depths potentially reaching up to four inches in some areas.
By the early hours of the morning, around 3 AM, snow showers will start to blanket parts of the UK, with Essex, Suffolk, and Powys among the regions likely to experience significant snowfall. The forecast indicates that temperatures will plummet to lows of -4°C, creating hazardous conditions on the roads.
As the day progresses, the weather will remain unsettled. Rainfall is expected throughout March 25, with sleet build-up likely in many areas. By 6 PM, lighter snow is forecasted for Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Essex, and Norfolk, but the threat of icy conditions will linger.
Steven Keates, deputy chief forecaster at the Met Office, noted, “After a spell of mild and brighter weather, the UK will become increasingly unsettled in the coming days.” This stark contrast serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of British weather.
Jo Farrow, a meteorologist with Netweather, added, “For the new working week, the trend is to colder conditions with mention of snow showers from the northwest.” As temperatures remain below average, peaking only between 5°C and 10°C, the risk of widespread frost, particularly in rural areas, will increase during the colder nights.
As communities prepare for the impending storm, the implications of this weather event are significant. With 18 regions facing potential blizzards, residents are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions.
While the snow storm is expected to bring challenges, forecasters predict a shift towards more settled weather as high pressure builds in from the south-west towards the end of the week. Until then, the UK must brace for the harsh conditions that lie ahead.
