What Happened
Starting from 25 February 2026, nationals from 85 countries who currently do not require a visa will need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to enter the UK. This new requirement aims to create a more streamlined and secure immigration system for millions of travelers each year, as reported by multiple sources.
Why It Matters
The ETA is a digital permit that allows eligible visitors to stay in the UK for up to six months for tourism or family visits. It is essential for travelers from countries such as the United States, Canada, and France. The introduction of the ETA is expected to enhance border security and efficiency, as airlines will be responsible for checking that passengers possess the necessary documentation before boarding flights to the UK.
What’s Next
As of now, the UK government has issued over 13.3 million ETAs since the phased rollout began in October 2023. However, the requirement will become mandatory in 2026, and travelers without an ETA will be barred from boarding their transport. The cost of an ETA is £16 and is valid for multiple journeys over two years or until the passport expires. British and Irish citizens are exempt from this requirement but must present valid documentation when traveling.
