A large-scale police operation involving 500 officers has led to multiple arrests at the headquarters of the Ahmadi Religion of Peace and Light in Crewe, amid serious allegations of sexual offences and modern slavery.

The raid took place on April 29, 2026, targeting a group that relocated from Sweden to the UK in 2021. The Cheshire Police, acting on reports of forced marriage and other serious allegations, mobilized a substantial force to execute the operation. This unprecedented action reflects an escalating concern surrounding the group’s activities.

In total, about 150 individuals reside at the AROPL headquarters, a former orphanage known as Webb House. Among them are 56 children who are currently home-schooled. The alleged offences reportedly centered around one victim — a woman within the group — and occurred in 2023. The authorities have not disclosed specifics about her case but emphasize their commitment to safeguarding all residents.

The Ahmadi Religion of Peace and Light blends Islamic tenets with conspiracy theories, creating a unique belief system that has attracted attention across 40 countries. Since its establishment in Iraq, it has garnered an estimated 7,000 contacts globally. Yet, this recent incident casts a long shadow over its reputation.

Chief Superintendent Gareth Wrigley addressed concerns following the arrests: “This is not an investigation into the religion; this is an investigation into the serious allegations which have been reported to us.” He reaffirmed that the police take all reports of sexual assault seriously and are dedicated to pursuing justice.

As investigations continue, police are working closely with local partners to ensure appropriate safeguarding measures for those living within the group. Meanwhile, AROPL’s lawyers have stated that any wrongdoing is vehemently denied by their client.

The suspects involved span various nationalities — American, Mexican, British, German, and Spanish — highlighting the diverse makeup of this community. While some may speculate about broader implications for religious freedom or community dynamics, authorities remain focused on individual accountability rather than targeting the entire group.

As this story develops, more details will likely emerge regarding both the legal proceedings against those arrested and the ongoing support for vulnerable individuals caught in this complex situation.
