On March 30, 2026, the cricketing world witnessed a significant moment as Brijesh Sharma made his IPL debut for Rajasthan Royals against the formidable Chennai Super Kings in Guwahati. This match not only marked a milestone in Sharma’s career but also highlighted the growing talent emerging from Jammu and Kashmir.

Just before the match, Rajasthan Royals won the toss and opted to bowl first, setting the stage for Sharma to showcase his skills on a grand platform. The anticipation was palpable, given that Sharma had recently finished joint-fifth among the top wicket-takers in the 2025 Bengal Pro T20 League, where he claimed 11 wickets in just 7 matches.

At 27 years old, Sharma’s journey to this moment has been anything but easy. Hailing from Udhampur, Jammu and Kashmir, he initially represented his state at the Under-19 and Under-25 levels. His father, a labourer, faced financial constraints, making the pursuit of a cricketing career challenging. Yet, Sharma’s determination led him to move to Bengal in search of better training opportunities.

Training under coach Deepak Punia at Unique Sports Club in Delhi, Sharma honed his skills, learning the discipline required to compete at higher levels. Reflecting on his journey, he shared, “My journey has had its ups and downs; I learnt a great deal about discipline and things I needed to bring to play cricket at a higher level.”

Sharma’s rise has not only been a personal triumph but also a beacon of hope for aspiring cricketers from his region. His performances in domestic cricket paved the way for his IPL call-up, where he was picked by Rajasthan Royals for his base price of Rs 30 lakhs during the IPL 2026 auction.

As he stepped onto the field, the support from his friends and family resonated with him. “My father’s hard work has paid off; my friends supported me financially and emotionally. They believed in me more than I did,” he remarked, acknowledging the collective effort that brought him to this moment.

Now, as he embarks on this new chapter with Rajasthan Royals, Sharma’s story serves as a reminder of the pathways that still exist in Indian cricket, where talent and perseverance can lead to remarkable opportunities.

With his IPL debut, Brijesh Sharma not only aims to make a mark in the tournament but also hopes to inspire the next generation of cricketers from Jammu and Kashmir, proving that dreams can indeed become a reality.
