Capybaras, known for their friendly and curious nature, have recently captured the attention of the public following a remarkable incident at Marwell Zoo, located near Winchester, Hampshire. Samba, a nine-month-old capybara, escaped from the zoo just a day after her arrival, creating a stir among both zoo staff and local residents.

The escape occurred on a Tuesday, shortly after Samba had settled into her new home. While her sister, Tango, was quickly recovered, Samba’s whereabouts became a mystery. Eyewitness Claudie Paddick was among the first to spot Samba, capturing a video of her sitting on the riverbank before she dove into the River Itchen.

Since then, Samba has been sighted nearly three miles from the zoo, near a pub in Owslebury. Reports have even indicated sightings of her 35 miles away in Stonehenge. This unexpected journey has turned Samba into a local celebrity, with many residents eager to catch a glimpse of the adventurous capybara.

In response to the escape, Marwell Zoo has deployed a specialist dog unit to track Samba’s scent and has also utilized thermal drones to aid in the search. The zoo has urged locals to check their gardens, ponds, and rivers for any signs of the elusive animal.

Claudie Paddick, who first encountered Samba, expressed her surprise, stating, “I was taking the dogs along the river bank and noticed something that I thought was a beaver.” She noted that the zoo was relieved to see Samba looking happy and not too stressed during her brief moments of freedom.

As the search continues, Laura Read, a spokesperson for the zoo, has urged the public to keep an eye out for Samba, especially after sunset. “Please keep an eye out for her after sunset and be careful when driving,” she advised.

Marwell Zoo is also conducting a review to understand how Samba managed to escape, ensuring that such incidents can be prevented in the future. The zoo has emphasized that should any member of the public see Samba, they should not approach her but instead contact the zoo’s 24-hour hotline.

With the community rallying together to help locate Samba, the story of her escape has not only highlighted the charm of capybaras but also the bond between humans and wildlife. As the search efforts intensify, the hope remains that Samba will be safely returned to her home at Marwell Zoo.
