Eta Aquarid Meteor Shower: A Dimming Spectacle for Northern Observers

Stargazers eagerly await the Eta Aquarid meteor shower, peaking on May 6, 2026. For many, it’s a chance to witness shooting stars streaking across the sky. Yet, this year brings a significant challenge for those in the Northern Hemisphere.

The moon will be 84% full during the peak, casting a bright light that washes out many of the meteors. While observers in the Southern Hemisphere may see up to 50 meteors per hour under ideal conditions, those in the North can expect fewer than 10 meteors per hour. The contrast is striking.

Teri Gee from the American Meteor Society notes, “For us in the Northern Hemisphere, it’s not going to be as impressive.” This stark difference leaves many wondering how much they’ll actually see.

The Eta Aquarids are debris from Halley’s Comet—last seen in 1986 and not expected back until 2061. Each year, as Earth passes through this trail of cosmic dust, it offers a brief window for stargazing enthusiasts. But with light pollution and now an overpowering moon, this year’s experience might feel underwhelming.

For those determined to catch a glimpse, experts advise timing. The best viewing hours are between midnight and 4:25 AM. Royal Museums Greenwich suggests bringing a comfy chair and wrapping up warm since hunting for meteors can be a waiting game.

Nico Adams describes the experience: “You’re looking for bright streaks that appear in the corner of your eye for a fraction of a second.” It’s all about patience and persistence.

While some may find themselves disappointed by the celestial conditions this year, others might embrace the challenge. After all, astronomy has always been about more than just numbers; it’s about connection—between people and the cosmos.
