Hantavirus infections cruise ship

hantavirus infections cruise ship — GB news

A cluster of hantavirus infections was reported among travelers aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship in the Atlantic Ocean on May 5, 2026. As of May 4, seven cases have been identified, including two laboratory-confirmed and five suspected cases.

Among those affected, three fatalities have been recorded, and one patient remains in critical condition in South Africa. Symptoms began appearing between April 6 and April 28, primarily characterized by fever and gastrointestinal distress. The index case tragically died on April 11 while still on board.

This outbreak has drawn attention from international health authorities. A coordinated response is underway involving the World Health Organization and various countries, including Spain, South Africa, and the United Kingdom. The MV Hondius had set sail from Ushuaia, Argentina, on March 20, heading for the Canary Islands with a total of 147 individuals on board.

Key details of the outbreak:

  • Seven total cases of hantavirus infection identified.
  • Three fatalities recorded among infected individuals.
  • One patient remains critically ill under medical care in South Africa.
  • The outbreak appears confined to the cruise ship with no evidence of spread within African countries.

The World Health Organization suspects that some rare human-to-human transmission may have occurred among close contacts on board. Maria Van Kerkhove stated, “We do believe that there may be some human-to-human transmission that’s happening among the really close contacts.” Meanwhile, a British crew member and a Dutch colleague are being medically evacuated due to respiratory symptoms.

Hantaviruses are primarily transmitted through contact with infected rodent excreta, saliva, or urine—making rodent control and environmental health controls crucial in preventing further outbreaks. This incident highlights how zoonotic viruses can emerge in confined or highly connected settings such as cruise ships.

Yet uncertainties loom: the exact source and mode of exposure for these hantavirus infections remain unclear. Officials have not confirmed whether ongoing transmission among crew members is possible. As investigations continue, health authorities are urging vigilance and awareness regarding zoonotic infections.
