Why Are So Many Flights Cancelled Due to the Recent Winter Storm?

What Happened

Thousands of flights have been cancelled across the United States and Europe as a result of a severe winter storm that has impacted the northeastern states. The storm, described as “historic,” brought heavy snowfall, fierce winds, and coastal flooding, leading to significant disruptions in air travel.

Why It Matters

On February 19, the storm caused the cancellation of over 210 flights and delayed more than 2,700 others across multiple countries, including the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, Italy, Belgium, and Austria. Major airports such as Amsterdam Schiphol and London Heathrow were particularly affected, with airlines like KLM and easyJet reporting substantial operational challenges. In the U.S., over 60% of flights arriving at New York’s JFK and LaGuardia airports were cancelled on Sunday, with Delta, American, and JetBlue grounding numerous flights until at least Monday evening.

What’s Next

As the snow begins to taper off, recovery efforts are underway. However, it may take several days for normal operations to resume at affected airports. Passengers are advised to check with their airlines for the latest updates on flight statuses and potential rebooking options.
