Hantavirus Outbreak Claims Three Lives on Cruise Ship

“It is believed they died due to a hantavirus infection, a severe, often fatal disease spread primarily through inhaling airborne particles from rodent urine, droppings, or saliva,” stated a health official. This alarming revelation follows the tragic news that three people have died aboard the MV Hondius during its voyage in the Atlantic Ocean.

The outbreak began when a 70-year-old passenger first exhibited symptoms. Sadly, he died on board. His body was subsequently transferred to the island of Saint Helena. His 69-year-old wife also fell ill and later succumbed to the virus in Johannesburg, South Africa. Another victim, a 69-year-old British man, is currently in intensive care.

The MV Hondius was en route from Ushuaia, Argentina to Cape Verde when this crisis unfolded. With a capacity of 170 passengers, it raises significant concerns about how such an outbreak could occur in such close quarters.

Key facts about the outbreak:

  • One confirmed case of hantavirus infection and five additional suspected cases are being investigated.
  • The World Health Organization (WHO) is actively coordinating with national authorities and the ship’s operators for medical evacuations.
  • Hantavirus infections are typically linked to environmental exposure to infected rodents’ urine or faeces.

Officials are still determining how many other passengers may show symptoms. The exact number remains unclear, leaving many families anxious and seeking information.

The vessel is operated by Dutch tour company Oceanwide Expeditions. As investigations continue into the cause of this outbreak—likely linked to rodent exposure—health authorities emphasize vigilance for symptoms among those who traveled on the ship.
