“I had been out for much longer than I anticipated and I needed to go home. I let myself out. She was asleep on the bed.” Those were the words of James Holder, co-founder of Superdry, as he recounted the night that changed everything. On May 1, 2026, a jury found him guilty of raping a woman after a night out in Cheltenham.
The incident occurred on May 6, 2022. The court heard that the woman was intoxicated and repeatedly asked Holder to stop during their encounter. Yet, he insisted that their interaction was consensual. This stark contrast between their accounts highlights the ongoing struggle around issues of consent in society—especially within nightlife culture.
Holder’s defense claimed that the woman regretted a drunken sexual encounter. “This was a drunken sexual encounter that you regret?” questioned Michelle Heeley KC during the trial. But James Haskell, a witness for the prosecution, painted a different picture: “She was telling him to stop. At one point, she remembered starting to cry, but even then, he didn’t stop.” The emotional weight of those details resonates deeply within discussions about accountability and consent.
Holder’s background adds another layer to this complex narrative. He helped launch Superdry in 2003 alongside Julian Dunkerton, blending vintage Americana with Japanese-inspired graphics—a brand synonymous with streetwear. By 2018, his estimated fortune stood at around £199 million. Yet now, his legacy is overshadowed by the conviction for sexual assault.
During the trial at Gloucester Crown Court, it emerged that Holder had fallen asleep on the victim’s bed after they had been drinking together. The woman even filmed him snoring—an unsettling detail that only intensified the gravity of her testimony against him.
As conversations around sexual assault and consent continue to evolve in our society, this case serves as a critical reminder of the importance of accountability—especially among those in positions of influence within industries like fashion.
The next ruling related to this case is expected on May 12 in Lisbon.
