Kirkcudbright Book Festival Sees Increased Attendance

The Kirkcudbright Book Festival, held from March 11 to March 14, 2026, has recorded a significant turnout, with 580 attendees participating in 21 events. This marks a 23 percent increase in attendance compared to last year’s Book Week, highlighting a growing interest in literary events within the community.

The festival, chaired by author Naomi Johnson, featured a blend of local voices and visiting writers, aiming to broaden its appeal and deepen engagement with the local population. Johnson expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “This new look Festival had a buzz, excitement and energy celebrating local authors and stories bringing together Scottish and UK voices.”

Among the notable speakers were Rosemary Goring, who presented on the historical figure Mary Queen of Scots, and Robert Crawford, who discussed the life and works of Robert Burns. Additionally, Beaty Rubens explored the impact of radio on British culture, while Carrie Marshall addressed the intersection of LGBT communities and the power of music.

Richard McLauchlan contributed to the festival’s diverse programming by discussing the cultural history of the bagpipes, further enriching the festival’s offerings. The inclusion of such varied topics reflects the festival’s commitment to showcasing a wide range of literary and cultural discussions.

The four-day event not only celebrated established authors but also introduced new ideas and writers, marking a new direction for the festival. Johnson noted, “It builds on the previous great work in the town of past Book Weeks, developing the Festival in a new direction with new ideas and writers.” This fresh approach appears to resonate well with attendees, as evidenced by the increased participation.

As the festival concluded, local organisers began to consider how to maintain the momentum generated over the weekend for future programming. The success of this year’s festival suggests a promising future for literary events in Kirkcudbright, with the potential for continued growth and community engagement.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding specific plans for next year’s festival, but the positive feedback from attendees and participants alike indicates a strong foundation for future events. The Kirkcudbright Book Festival has not only become a platform for literary expression but also a celebration of local culture and community spirit.
