Klm: Air France- Adjusts Capacity Growth Forecast Amid Rising Fuel Costs
Air France-KLM has slashed its capacity growth forecast for 2026, now expecting an increase of between 2% and 4%, down from the previously anticipated 3% to 5%. This shift comes as the airline grapples with a staggering projected $2.4 billion rise in fuel costs, largely attributed to ongoing geopolitical tensions—particularly the Iran war.
The airline’s total fuel bill is expected to hit $9.3 billion in 2026, a significant jump from the previous year. This increase isn’t just a number; it reflects the harsh reality facing the airline industry today, where soaring fuel prices threaten profitability and operational stability.
In the first quarter of 2026, Air France-KLM reported an operating loss of €27 million, which was actually better than analysts had projected—€389 million. KLM’s Back on Track improvement program managed to save €159 million during this period, but it seems that even these efforts may not be enough to counteract the financial pressures ahead.
KLM CEO Marjan Rintel highlighted that “ongoing geopolitical uncertainty and sharply increased fuel prices will pressure results from the second quarter.” The inability to fully pass on these elevated costs to customers complicates matters further, as KLM navigates this turbulent landscape.
Concerns over the blockage of the Strait of Hormuz have pushed Brent crude prices up to a four-year high of $126 per barrel. This situation adds another layer of complexity for airlines trying to manage costs while maintaining service levels.
As Ben Smith, Air France-KLM’s CEO, noted, the operating environment remains “uncertain.” Observers are keenly watching how these developments will unfold in the coming months—especially as airlines like KLM strive for cost control amidst rising operational challenges.
