Lens Dominates Metz in 3-0 Victory
In a decisive match on Sunday, Lens defeated Metz 3-0, significantly impacting the Ligue 1 standings. This victory brings Lens within just one point of league leaders Paris Saint-Germain.
Saud Abdulhamid opened the scoring for Lens, followed by Florian Thauvin, who doubled the lead shortly after the break. Amadou Haidara sealed the win with the third goal, marking a crucial performance for Lens.
With this win, Lens has registered only their second victory in the last 11 meetings against Metz. The match also highlights Metz’s ongoing struggles, as they have not won in the league since November and remain at the bottom of the Ligue 1 table.
Metz’s performance has been particularly concerning, having taken only two points from their last 13 matches. They have blanked in five of their last six league outings, which has stretched their winless run to 13 matches, leaving them 11 points adrift of safety.
Lens, on the other hand, has shown resilience, winning for the first time in three matches. They have nine games remaining in the season, and their recent form at home has been impressive, with six clean-sheet victories in their last eight league matches.
Florian Thauvin’s goal was his fourth in five matches, showcasing his vital role in Lens’s attacking strategy. “There are still a few hills to climb but being within a point of PSG with nine games to go is a good thing in itself,” said Lens coach Pierre Sage, reflecting on the team’s position.
Despite the loss, Metz came close to scoring a consolation goal when Alpha Toure’s effort trickled wide, but they ultimately offered little in response to Lens’s dominant display.
As Lens continues to chase PSG for the title this season, the pressure mounts on Metz to find a way out of their current slump. The situation remains critical for the bottom-placed team as they look to salvage their season.
