On March 12, 2023, an unexpected IT glitch at Lloyds Banking Group led to a significant data breach, exposing the transaction details of joint account holders—even those who hadn’t logged into the app. Over 520,000 customers may have been affected by this incident.

The software defect occurred after an overnight update, allowing users to inadvertently view others’ transactions. This wasn’t just a minor error; it meant that payments and charges intended for strangers flashed across screens—creating confusion and concern among customers.

Key statistics:

  • 80,508 joint account holders potentially had their transaction details viewed by others.
  • 446,915 customers logged into the app during the incident.
  • 107,937 customers clicked on transactions belonging to others.

Many users expressed alarm. One Bank of Scotland customer recounted, “I logged in and seen a payment I didn’t recognise and I refreshed it and it was gone.” Others questioned the legitimacy of unexpected transactions—”Why are transactions coming out to London when I live in Scotland?”—highlighting the confusion this glitch sowed.

Lloyds responded by issuing alerts on the app home screen to those affected. They’ve also begun compensating customers, paying out £201,000 to 5,250 individuals since March 24 and an additional £62,000 in goodwill payments to 1,625 others.

Despite the severity of this breach, Lloyds has not reported an increase in daily levels of fraud since the incident. However, they noted that compensation payments were not warranted for all cases—”Accordingly, we have not made compensation payments on this basis,” a representative stated.

The aftermath leaves questions lingering. What measures will be taken to prevent future glitches? How will customer trust be rebuilt? As investigations continue into the cause and impact of this software defect, customers await clarity on how their data is being protected moving forward.
