A crash involving a van has caused severe traffic congestion on the M25 clockwise in Surrey, just as millions prepare to travel for the early May bank holiday weekend. Motorists are currently stuck between junction J10 (Guildford) and J11 (Woking), with queues stretching for six miles and delays reaching around 45 minutes.
As families and friends hit the road, this year’s early May bank holiday is expected to be the busiest on UK roads in a decade. Around 19 million trips are forecasted over the weekend, with 3.7 million people taking to the roads today—dubbed “Frantic Friday.” Saturday is projected to be even busier, with about 4 million trips anticipated.
Key statistics:
- Queues extending for six miles on the M25 clockwise
- Delays of approximately 45 minutes reported
- 19 million trips expected over the entire bank holiday weekend
- 3.7 million drivers hitting the roads today
- 4 million trips forecasted for Saturday alone
The situation isn’t just affecting one direction—there are also severe delays on the anticlockwise carriageway, with queues stretching back toward Heathrow Airport and junction J13. National Highways reported that Surrey Police are on scene, working to manage the aftermath of this unfortunate incident.
Sean Kimberlin from RAC noted that despite fuel prices being uncomfortably high—averaging 157.17 pence per litre for petrol and 189.23 pence for diesel—drivers are undeterred when it comes to making plans for a long weekend getaway.
The next few days will likely see more congestion as travelers flock to various destinations across the UK. Officials advise motorists to plan their journeys carefully and expect delays, especially during peak hours.
