The Maundy Thursday service in 2026 is set to be a momentous occasion, taking place on April 2 at St Asaph Cathedral in Denbighshire, Wales. This event will not only commemorate the Last Supper but also highlight the themes of humility and service to others, which are central to the Maundy tradition.

For the second time in its 800-year history, St Asaph Cathedral will host the Royal Maundy service, a significant milestone that underscores the importance of this event in the local community. The service is renowned for its presentation of Maundy Money, which is awarded to individuals in recognition of their outstanding community service.

In 2023, King Charles III presented Maundy Money to 77 men and 77 women, a tradition that continues to resonate deeply within the fabric of British society. Each recipient receives a white purse containing specially minted silver Maundy coins totaling 77 pennies, along with a red purse that includes a £5 coin and a 50p coin celebrating significant anniversaries.

Very Revd Nigel Williams expressed his delight at hosting the King and Queen, stating, “It has been a delight to host the King and Queen at St Asaph Cathedral today for the annual Royal Maundy service.” This sentiment reflects the pride and joy of the local community in welcoming such esteemed guests.

The Most Reverend Cherry Vann also shared her gratitude, saying, “My immense gratitude to Their Majesties for attending this wonderful service today – we hope that everyone’s enjoyed this celebration of Welsh culture, music, and people.” This highlights the service’s role in fostering a sense of community and cultural pride.

The Maundy service has a rich historical significance, linking back to the Last Supper, where Jesus washed the feet of his disciples, emphasizing the importance of serving others. As the 2026 event approaches, anticipation builds around how this year’s service will unfold and who will be honored.

With the event drawing near, many are eager to see how the traditions will be upheld and what new elements may be introduced. Details remain unconfirmed, but the community is buzzing with excitement for this historic occasion.
