Essential Maintenance on the Essex Thameside Line

National Rail has announced that essential maintenance will take place on the Essex Thameside line over several weekends in April and May 2026. This work aims to improve ride quality and minimize long-term track wear, ensuring more reliable and resilient journeys for passengers.

Specifically, the maintenance is scheduled for the weekends of April 4-5 and April 11-12, 2026. During these weekends, services on the Basildon line will be diverted to Liverpool Street, while shuttle trains will operate between Upminster and Grays on the Ockendon line. Passengers are advised to allow extra time for their journeys due to potential service disruptions.

Mark Walker, a spokesperson for Network Rail, stated, “We’re carrying out vital upgrades along the Essex Thameside line to make journeys more reliable and resilient for passengers.” This investment in infrastructure reflects a broader commitment to enhancing the rail network across the UK.

In addition to the Essex Thameside line work, there are significant updates regarding the railway between Newport and Cardiff Central. This line will close from Friday, March 20, to Monday, March 23, 2026, for necessary track renewal work. During this closure, buses will replace trains, and passengers are encouraged to check their journey plans in advance.

Colin Lea, representing Transport for Wales, emphasized the importance of planning ahead, saying, “We’re encouraging all passengers travelling between Cardiff and Newport to check their journey in advance, as many of our services will be affected throughout the weekend.” This closure is part of ongoing efforts to maintain safety and reliability on this busy stretch of railway.

Furthermore, the Moat Lane crossing will be closed from March 10, 2026, between 7 PM and 6:05 AM. A 67-mile diversion will be implemented during this period, which is expected to add approximately 1.5 hours to travel times for some road users. The road is scheduled to reopen by 6:05 AM on March 11, 2026.

Rob Mullen, a spokesperson for c2c, noted, “This work will strengthen the route for years to come, and we would urge all c2c customers to check before they travel during this period.” The ongoing maintenance and upgrades are crucial for ensuring that the rail services can meet the demands of passengers and freight services alike.

As these maintenance works approach, passengers are reminded to stay informed through National Rail Enquiries or the c2c website. Details remain unconfirmed regarding any additional service changes that may arise as the dates draw closer.
