Romanian government collapses

Romania’s pro-European government collapsed on May 5, 2026, following a no-confidence vote that caught many by surprise. In a dramatic turn of events, the motion received 281 votes in the 464-seat parliament, marking a significant shift in the political landscape.

The immediate aftermath is chaotic. Ilie Bolojan, the Prime Minister from the National Liberal Party (PNL), led a coalition that was once seen as stable but now faces uncertainty. The budget deficit looms large—almost 8% in 2025, the highest in the European Union. As political turmoil brews, early elections seem inevitable.

This collapse underscores an unexpected alliance; the Social Democrats (PSD) joined forces with the far-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) to push through the no-confidence vote. The AUR has gained traction recently, polling at about 37%, surpassing PSD as the most popular party. This shift raises eyebrows in Brussels, where stability is paramount.

Amidst this upheaval, Bolojan criticized the censure motion as “false, cynical and artificial.” He argued that it fails to offer any alternatives for governance—a sentiment echoed by Cătălin Predoiu, who stated, “We must keep our options open.” Meanwhile, Sorin Grindeanu reassured that “there is life after the no-confidence vote,” hinting at potential paths forward.

Next steps remain unclear. Nicușor Dan is expected to consult with party leaders to form a new coalition government. However, officials have not disclosed a timeline for this process; parliament has 60 days to approve a nominee for prime minister. With Romania’s next parliamentary election not scheduled until 2028, uncertainty reigns.

The last coalition was formed after months of political turmoil following the 2025 elections. Now, as new alliances form and old ones crumble, Romania stands at a crossroads—its future uncertain amid rising tensions and shifting loyalties.
